What are brown kraft mailer boxes?

They are corrugated mailer boxes where the outer face of the board is brown kraft paper. Nothing is laid over that brown surface unless you ask for print, so the box looks like plain card with a fine paper grain.

The shape is the same as any of our mailers: a base, walls and a hinged lid cut from one sheet. What changes is the starting colour, and that colour shapes every print decision after it. Kraft sits within our printed mailer boxes and finishes range beside white and matt black options.

Why pick brown kraft over white board?

Brown kraft hides scuffs, fingerprints and the odd knock in transit far better than a pale face. It also looks finished with no print at all, which a plain white box rarely does.

White-lined board wins when the artwork relies on bright, pale or photographic colour. If your design is mostly pastel shades, our white mailer boxes in lined board are the better base.

How does print look on brown kraft board?

Ink on kraft is slightly see-through, so the brown shows through every colour you print. Black, navy, deep red and dark brown sit crisply. Yellow, pink and light blue go dull and lose contrast unless they are printed over a white base.

• Plain kraft with no print, for a quiet look and the lowest cost.
• One colour, usually black or a dark brand colour, for a logo and a web address.
• Two colours, such as a dark logo with a white line pattern beside it.
• Full colour over a white underprint, for artwork that has to hold its shades.
• Print on the inside faces as well, so the lid opens onto a message or pattern.

A single dark logo in the middle of the lid is the most common kraft job we see. It costs little, reads from across a room and suits the brown well.

What does a white underprint do on kraft?

A white underprint is a layer of white ink laid exactly where the colour will go. The colour then prints on white instead of brown, so pale shades stay bright and the rest of the box keeps its kraft face.

It works well for a coloured logo on an otherwise plain lid. For artwork covering the whole box, white-lined board is usually tidier, because a full white flood on kraft can look slightly uneven at the creases.

What size brown kraft mailer box do I need?

Start from the packed item, not from a box you think is close. Most of our kraft orders begin near 250 x 180 x 80 mm inside and move from there.

1. Put the item in its wrapping, with any card or leaflet, on a flat table.
2. Measure the longest side, the widest side and the highest point in millimetres.
3. Add 3 to 5 mm a side so the lid closes without pressing on the contents.
4. Add the board thickness twice to each figure to estimate the outside size.
5. Compare that outside size with the postal band you plan to use.

E-flute or B-flute for a kraft mailer?

E-flute is 1.5 mm and has a tight, fine ripple under the brown face. Print edges stay sharp and the box keeps a neat, thin profile, which helps a slim parcel stay under a band.

B-flute is 3 mm and gives thicker, springier walls. Pick it for boxes past about 300 mm long, for jars and boots, or when the lid will be opened and closed often. Both use the same brown face, so they look alike side by side. Read our comparison of E-flute and B-flute board before you choose.

Printing inside a brown kraft box

The inside of a kraft board is brown too, so a dark single colour inside the lid shows up well. A short thank-you line, a pattern or care instructions all fit on that panel.

How do kraft mailers arrive and store?

Kraft board takes up moisture from damp air, so store bundles off a concrete floor and away from an open window. Fold each box as you pack it rather than folding a pile in advance.
