How to measure for a double sided printed mailer box

Lay out the full order with any card or tissue and measure the longest, widest and tallest points. Add 3 to 5 mm to each so the lid closes without rubbing the inside print.

Send those figures as the inside size. We build both artwork templates from that size, so get it right before you design.

Which board for which job

E-flute at 1.5 mm holds fine detail best on both faces, so it is our usual board for double sided work. B-flute at 3 mm suits larger or denser boxes, where a bolder pattern reads better than small type.

What is a double sided printed mailer box?

It is a standard one-piece mailer with a roll-over lid, printed on the outer face and the inner face of the same sheet. The outside carries your logo, colour or pattern. The inside carries a second design that only the customer sees.

The box folds and closes like any tuck front mailer. The difference is entirely in the print, which means you do not have to learn a new packing routine or change your shelf layout. It sits alongside the other closures in our guide to mailer box styles.

What can you print on each side?

Each face is set up as its own artwork, so the two designs can be quite different. These are the panels buyers use most.

Outside wallsCustomer at the doorStrapline or a repeat pattern
Inside lidCustomer on openingThank-you note or a bold message
Inside lid flapsCustomer on openingPattern carried on from the lid

A solid colour inside with a plain kraft outside is a quiet, low-cost way to start. Once that works, add a pattern to the outer lid on the next order without changing the size or the cutting die.

How is a double sided box printed?

Both faces are printed on the flat sheet before it is cut and creased. The order of work is simple to follow.

  1. You send the inside size and two artworks, or a brief for each face.
  2. We return two flat proofs, one for the outside and one for the inside, laid on the box template.
  3. You check that the inside message reads the right way up when the lid opens.
  4. Once you approve both proofs, the sheet is printed on each face and varnished.
  5. The printed sheets are die-cut, creased and bundled flat for delivery.

You can sketch both faces on our Design Your Mailer Box page before sending files.

Who orders double sided printed boxes?

Brands whose customers open the parcel on camera, or keep the box after the product is used. A printed lining turns a shipping carton into something people store their bits in.

  • Skincare and beauty labels with a message printed under the lid.
  • Stationery and card shops lining the box in a signature pattern.
  • Wedding favour makers printing a short line for the couple inside.
  • Subscription boxes changing the inside design each month on the same outer.
  • Clothing brands that keep the outside plain and the inside loud.
  • Jewellery sellers framing a small item with a solid coloured base.

Which board shows double sided print best?

White-lined board gives a white outer face and a brown inner face. It suits bright outsides with a kraft inside printed in one or two colours.

Brown kraft on both faces gives a natural look, with white ink or a white underprint to make colours read. For fine type, keep to E-flute; the E-flute and B-flute comparison explains why.

What does white ink look like on kraft?

White on brown kraft prints slightly soft and warm, a little like chalk on card. Small repeat patterns and short lines look good this way, as in our third photo.

For bright colours on kraft, a white underprint goes down first so the colour sits on white rather than brown. Our brown kraft mailer boxes show how far plain kraft can go on its own.

What size double sided box do I need?

Size it to the packed contents, then add 3 to 5 mm a side. Too much room lets items slide and rub the inside print.

We often start at 250 x 180 x 80 mm, which suits a small set or a folded garment, and go up or down from there. Most sizes travel as a Royal Mail Small Parcel, up to 450 x 350 x 160 mm. Check the current band limits before you order. See box sizes against Royal Mail bands for slimmer options.

Setting up artwork for the inside

The inside of the lid is upside down on the flat sheet compared with the outside. Our template marks which way is up on each panel, so set text to that mark and not to the outer design.

Keep text 5 mm clear of creases and fold lines, as type over a fold breaks when the box closes. Patterns can run across folds happily, because a small break in a repeat is hard to spot. Our page on printing inside a box lid shows safe areas for each panel.

Do inserts hide the inside print?

A die-cut board insert covers the base and part of the walls, so print there will be hidden until the insert is lifted. Put your main message on the inside lid, which stays in view.

Dividers and paper void fill hide less, and a coloured lining showing between paper twists looks deliberate. All are quoted with the box. If the insert is the main part of the job, look at mailer boxes fitted with inserts.

Mistakes to avoid with double sided print

  • Setting the inside lid text the same way up as the outside lid.
  • Running small type across the lid fold or the dust flaps.
  • Printing a pale colour straight onto kraft with no white underprint.
  • Hiding the key message on the base under an insert.
  • Approving only the outside proof and skimming the inside one.

Double Sided Printed Mailer Boxes questions

All help topics
What does double sided printed mailer box mean?

It means the board is printed on both faces, outside and inside. The box folds and closes like any tuck front mailer.

Can the inside and outside of a double sided box use different colours?

Yes. Each face is its own artwork, so a black outside with a pink inside, or plain kraft with a full colour lining, both work.

Can a double sided printed box have full colour inside and one colour outside?

Yes. Each face is quoted for its own print, so you can mix full colour on one side with one colour on the other.

Which way up does the inside lid print on a double sided box?

It reads correctly when the lid is open and the customer looks down into the box. Our template marks the top of each inside panel.

Does the inside print on a double sided box rub off?

Contents moving in a loose box can scuff it. Size the box with 3 to 5 mm clearance and add tissue to protect a dark lining.

Can I print a message under the lid of a double sided mailer?

Yes, it is the most common use. A short line in large type reads best when the box opens.

Can white ink go on the inside of a kraft double sided box?

Yes. White prints softly on brown kraft and suits patterns and short lines on either face.

Do I get two proofs for a double sided printed box?

Yes, one for the outside and one for the inside, both free. Nothing is printed until you approve both.

Can the inside of a double sided box change each month while the outside stays the same?

Yes. Many subscription boxes keep one outer design and switch the inside artwork for each new order.

Is varnish applied to both faces of a double sided box?

Matt or gloss varnish is applied to the outside as standard. Ask if you would like the inside varnished too.

Will an insert cover the print in a double sided box?

It can cover the base and lower walls. Keep your key message on the inside lid, which stays visible.

What happens if the inside print of a double sided box arrives wrong?

Email clear photos of the faulty panel within 10 days and the job is reprinted or refunded. The steps are on our returns and reprints page.
