How to measure for a custom printed mailer box
Pack the item the way it will leave you, with any tissue or card, then measure length, width and depth at the widest points. Add 3 to 5 mm to each so the printed lid closes flat without bulging.
Send the three figures as an inside size. Tell us if the box has to stay inside a postal band and we will check the outside against it.
Which board for which job
E-flute at 1.5 mm has a fine, flat surface that holds small type and thin lines well, so most printed jobs start there. B-flute at 3 mm suits larger boxes and denser goods, and it still takes bold artwork cleanly.

What makes a mailer box custom printed?
The artwork goes straight onto the corrugated sheet before it is cut and creased. There is no label or sleeve to apply, so every box comes off the bundle already dressed.
You choose where the ink goes: the outer walls and lid, the inside faces, or both. You also choose how much ink, from one flat colour on bare kraft to a full colour image that covers every panel. It sits in our printed mailer boxes and finishes range with matt black, white and plain kraft options.
Who orders printed mailer boxes?
Small brands that post from a unit or a spare room tend to reach this point once orders are steady. A plain box works, but a printed one saves time on stickers and stamps.
- Clothing labels sending folded tops with a printed message under the lid.
- Beauty and skincare sellers who want the box colour to match the product range.
- Subscription businesses changing the inside print each quarter while the outside stays the same.
- Craft and gift shops putting a pattern on every face for a wrapped look.
- Bakers and sweet shops posting tins or trays with their logo on the lid.
How many colours should the print use?
The number of colours shapes both the look and the quote. One colour suits logos and short lines of text. Two colours add an accent, such as a coloured logo with black contact details. Full colour handles photographs, gradients and dense patterns.
| Print choice | Good for | Board to pair it with |
|---|---|---|
| One colour | A logo and web address | Brown kraft |
| Two colours | Logo plus a contrast line or pattern | Kraft or white-lined |
| Full colour | Photos, gradients, all-over patterns | White-lined |
| Full colour on kraft | Bright artwork with a natural edge | Kraft with white underprint |
| Inside only | A message the customer sees on opening | Either board |
If you are unsure, send the artwork and we will suggest the simplest print that keeps it looking right.
Kraft or white-lined board for printing?
Brown kraft gives ink a warm, slightly muted tone. Dark colours read well on it, but pale ones fade into the brown unless a white underprint goes down first.
White-lined board shows colour as it looks on screen, near enough, and keeps pastels clean. Both come in E-flute 1.5 mm or B-flute 3 mm. Our page on choosing E-flute or B-flute board sets out when the thicker sheet pays its way.
Printing the inside of the lid
The underside of the lid is the first panel anyone sees once the box opens. A thank-you line, a pattern, a social handle or care instructions all fit there.
Inside print runs on the same sheet as the outside, so the two designs need to line up with the folds. We mark every crease and panel on the proof so you can see which way up each one sits. A short read on printing inside the lid of a mailer box covers safe areas and bleed.
What size printed mailer box do I need?
Size the box to the packed item, not to the artwork. Add 3 to 5 mm a side for clearance, then fit the design to the panels that result.
Our typical starting size is 250 x 180 x 80 mm inside, which takes a folded jumper or a small gift set. If you post as a Royal Mail Large Letter, the outside must stay within 353 x 250 x 25 mm; a Small Parcel allows 450 x 350 x 160 mm. Check the current band limits before you order, as both are measured on the outside.
Board thickness counts too. E-flute adds only a few millimetres to each outside figure, while B-flute adds a little more, which can tip a tight box into the next band. Tell us the band you are aiming for and we will size the inside to keep the outside under it.
How does the artwork proof work?
Every printed job gets a free design proof drawn onto the flat box layout. Nothing is printed until you approve it in writing.
- Send your logo or artwork, ideally as a vector file or a high-resolution image.
- We place it on a flat dieline showing every panel, fold and flap.
- You check spelling, colour notes and which panels face up when the box is closed.
- Ask for changes as often as you need until the layout is right.
- Approve the proof, and the job moves to the press.
No artwork yet? The Design Your Mailer Box page lets you place a logo and pick colours before you send anything.
Do printed mailer boxes need inserts?
Soft goods such as clothing rarely need more than tissue. Bottles, jars and sets do better with a die-cut board insert that holds each piece in place, and the insert can carry print too.
Dividers split one box into bays, and paper void fill closes up spare space for odd-shaped items. All three are quoted with the box, so the price arrives as one figure. Tell us what goes in each bay and how the customer should find it, and we draw the insert onto the same proof as the box print.
Mistakes to avoid with custom print
- Sending a low-resolution logo copied from a website and expecting crisp edges.
- Running fine white text on kraft with no white underprint behind it.
- Putting key wording across a fold, where it bends out of sight.
- Designing to the outside size when the size you gave us was the inside.
- Leaving no clear space for the postage label, so it covers the artwork.
- Checking the proof only on a phone without zooming in on small text.

Can custom printed mailer boxes be printed on all six faces?
Yes. The whole outside sheet can be printed edge to edge, and the inside can carry a separate design on the same job.
Will full colour print look bright on a kraft printed mailer box?
Only with a white underprint beneath it. Without one, colours take on the brown of the board and look darker than on screen.
Can my custom printed mailer box carry a different design inside and out?
Yes. The outside and inside are set up as two layouts on one proof, and each can use its own colours.
Is a matt or gloss varnish better on a printed mailer box?
Matt gives a soft, low-shine surface that hides fingerprints. Gloss makes colours look richer and catches the light. Both protect the print against rubbing in transit.
Can I print a QR code on a custom mailer box?
Yes. Keep it at least 20 mm across on a plain background and test it from the proof before you approve.
How close to the fold can artwork go on a printed mailer box?
Keep text and logos a few millimetres back from every crease. Background colour and patterns can run over the folds without trouble.
Can I change the inside print on my custom mailer boxes for each order run?
Yes. Many subscription sellers keep one outside design and swap the lid message each run, quoted as a new job each time.
Do custom printed mailer boxes cost more than plain ones?
Print adds to the price, and the jump depends on colours and coverage. Your quote shows the cost against the same box left plain if you ask.
What resolution should artwork be for a printed mailer box?
Vector files are best for logos. Photos should be at least 300 dpi at the size they will print on the box.
Can I match a brand colour on custom printed mailer boxes?
Send the colour reference with your artwork and we print as close as the board allows. White-lined board holds a reference colour more closely than kraft.
Will the printed lid of a mailer box crack along the fold?
Heavy ink on a sharp fold can show a fine line of board. A matt or gloss varnish and E-flute board both help keep that crease tidy.
Can you print a pattern on the inserts inside custom printed mailer boxes?
Yes. Board inserts can be printed in the same pass, so a pattern can carry on from the box into the insert. See insert fitted mailer boxes for set layouts.
