How to measure for a subscription box mailer
Lay out the fullest box you have sent or plan to send, packed as the customer will see it. Measure the longest, widest and tallest points of that layout and add 3 to 5 mm to each.
That gives one inside size that covers your busiest month. Lighter months then take a little paper void fill rather than a second box.
Which board for which job
E-flute at 1.5 mm suits most subscription boxes: it prints crisply inside and out and keeps the outside slim for postal bands. Move to B-flute at 3 mm when the box carries jars, bottles or books that press on the walls.

What makes a mailer right for a subscription box?
A subscription box goes to the same customer again and again, so the box itself becomes part of what they pay for. It has to look the same each month, open the same way and hold contents that change.
A roll-over lid mailer does all three. The lid lifts like a gift box, the side ears lock it shut without tape, and the inside of the lid is a printed panel your subscriber sees before anything else. It sits in our ecommerce and subscription mailer boxes range next to fragile and insert fitted styles.
Who uses subscription box mailers?
Any brand that ships a curated set on a schedule. The common thread is a box packed in a batch, then posted to a list.
- Beauty and skincare clubs sending four or five full or trial sizes.
- Snack and sweet boxes with a mix of bars, bags and a printed menu card.
- Book subscriptions posting a paperback with a bookmark and a hot drink sachet.
- Craft kits with yarn, a pattern sheet and a few small notions.
- Pet boxes with treats, a toy and a chew in its own wrapper.
- Sock, tea and coffee clubs that send a light, flat monthly parcel.
How do you choose one size for changing contents?
The aim is one box that works every month, so you only stock and reorder one item. Work through it in this order.
- List the bulkiest items you are likely to send over the next six months.
- Lay out the largest likely combination as it would sit in the box.
- Measure that layout and add 3 to 5 mm to each side for clearance.
- Check the outside size against the postal band you want to stay in.
- Plan a divider or insert only if items must stay in fixed positions.
If one month has an oversized item, it is usually cheaper to post that month in a second size than to make every box bigger.
Subscription box sizes and postal bands
Most subscription mailers land in the Small Parcel band, which is 450 x 350 x 160 mm on the outside. Very flat clubs, such as socks or tea, can fit the Large Letter band of 353 x 250 x 25 mm.
| Type of subscription | Inside size to try | Band to check |
|---|---|---|
| Tea or sock club | 220 x 160 x 20 mm | Large Letter |
| Skincare trial sizes | 200 x 150 x 60 mm | Small Parcel |
| Paperback and extras | 230 x 170 x 60 mm | Small Parcel |
| Snack mix | 250 x 180 x 80 mm | Small Parcel |
| Craft kit | 300 x 220 x 80 mm | Small Parcel |
| Pet treats and toy | 320 x 240 x 100 mm | Small Parcel |
Check the current band limits before you order. If you are still deciding, our list of mailer box sizes we often make is a useful place to compare footprints.
Should a subscription box be printed inside?
For most clubs, yes. The outside of a subscription box is often plain or one colour, so it travels quietly and keeps costs down. The inside of the lid is where the brand talks to the subscriber.
A full colour pattern, a welcome line or a note about this month's theme all work there. Some brands keep the outside fixed and change only the inside print for a seasonal edition, which keeps the parcel recognisable on the doormat. Our guide on printing inside the lid covers bleed and fold lines.
Kraft or white board for a subscription mailer?
Brown kraft gives a natural, handmade feel and takes one or two colours well. Full colour on kraft needs a white underprint so the brown does not dull it.
White-lined board shows pastels, photos and bright solids as they look on screen, as in the pink and blue boxes above. A matt varnish gives a soft feel in the hand, while gloss makes deep colours look rich. If an all-white look fits the brand, compare our white mailer boxes made to size as well.
Inserts and dividers for a monthly box
A die-cut board insert turns a loose box into a set layout. Each product sits in its own cut-out, and the subscriber sees the month laid out on opening, like the round cut-out insert shown in the second photo.
Inserts work best when the item shapes stay fixed from month to month. When they change, a simple divider and paper void fill give flexibility without a new insert each time. Brands built around a fixed layout often start with insert fitted mailer boxes instead.
Packing day with subscription box mailers
The boxes arrive flat, creased and bundled, with free tracked UK mainland delivery in 2 to 3 working days. Flat bundles stack on a pallet or a shelf, so a few months of boxes take little floor room.
On packing day, fold a full batch first, line them up, then fill them in a row. One person folding and one filling is a steady rhythm for a small team. Keep spare flat stock dry and strapped for the next run.
Mistakes subscription brands make with mailers
- Sizing the box around the first month only, then outgrowing it by month three.
- Printing the month or season on the outside, which leaves unused stock out of date.
- Ordering a new insert for every theme when a divider would do.
- Letting the outside depth creep a few millimetres over a postal band.
- Running stock down to the last bundle before asking for a reorder quote.
- Leaving no plain area for the address label on a fully printed lid.

Can one subscription box mailer size work every month?
Usually. Size it for your bulkiest likely month and use paper void fill in lighter months, so you stock a single box.
Can I change the inside print of my subscription box each season?
Yes. Many brands keep the outside artwork fixed and change only the inside lid print, so each edition feels new while the parcel stays familiar.
Do subscription box mailers need tape?
No. The side ears lock into the front and the lid tucks in. A printed sticker across the front is a popular seal for a subscription box.
Can a subscription box mailer fit the Large Letter band?
Flat clubs such as socks or tea can, if the outside stays within 353 x 250 x 25 mm. Check the current band limits before you order.
Which board works best for a beauty subscription box?
E-flute in white-lined board suits most beauty boxes, as it prints bright colour inside and out. Glass bottles may call for B-flute and an insert.
Can a subscription box mailer have an insert with cut-outs?
Yes. A die-cut board insert can hold each product in its own cut-out, quoted with the box. It works best when product shapes stay the same each month.
How far ahead should I reorder subscription box mailers?
Allow about two weeks from proof approval to delivery: 4 to 6 working days in production and 2 to 3 working days on the road.
Can I print a welcome message inside the subscription box lid?
Yes. A short message, a pattern or a full colour image can go inside the lid, on the same job as the outside print. Try a layout on the Design Your Mailer Box page.
Can I order two sizes of subscription box with the same artwork?
Yes. We adapt the same design to both sizes and send a proof of each for your approval.
Should the month be printed on a subscription box?
We advise against it. A dated box cannot be used the next month, while a dated card or sticker inside can.
Is gloss or matt better on a subscription box mailer?
Matt gives a soft, calm look and hides finger marks; gloss makes deep colours look richer. Both protect the print from rubbing in the post.
Can a subscription box mailer be plain outside and printed inside only?
Yes. A plain kraft or white outside with a printed inside is a common choice, as it travels discreetly and saves the colour for the opening.
